How to Transfer Music from a Computer to Your iPhone

Using iTunes is not the only way to transfer music from a computer to an iPhone.

You can alternatively use Wi-Fi transfer, cloud storage services, or other applications for managing music on iOS devices. In this article, I will cover all these methods.

Read on and choose the method that suits your needs.

1. Transfer Music to iPhone & iPad Using iTunes

The first method is to use iTunes – the mobile device management software from Apple. The following steps show you how to add music to your iPhone with this application.

Download iTunes here.

1) Connect your device to your computer.

2) Launch iTunes. If this is the first time you connect your iPhone to the computer, unlock your iPhone then permit the PC to access it.

First, you need to add your music files to iTunes Library. To do so, click File > Add to Library, or press Ctrl+O (Windows) / Cmd+O (Mac).

Finally, click Sync to start transferring music from your computer to your iPhone. Once the process is completed, you can find the synced music in the Apple Music app on your iPhone.

2. Transfer Music to iPhone Wirelessly via Wi-Fi

You can transfer music files from your PC to your iPhone wirelessly by using the apps below. They work similarly to AirDrop.

Your MP3 files are not added to the core library, instead, they are stored in these apps’ local storage.

Documents is a file manager app for iOS devices with the Wi-Fi transfer feature included. The easy-to-use interface and the ability to make playlists of music files automatically are the reasons I recommend using this app.

After installing the app, tap the gear button in the top-left corner to access Documents’ settings. Now select Wi-Fi Drive and turn on this feature.

Make sure both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

On your PC, open a web browser, then connect to your iPhone using the given URL in the Documents app. You will be able to send music from the PC through a web interface.

Music will be copied to the Documents app.

To create a playlist of your music, just put them in a folder using the app’s file manager. Documents’ music player looks pretty nice and it has all the essential functions to control music playback.

VLC for iOS

The VLC app for iOS can create a small web server which you can use to send files directly to your iPhone through a web browser, similarly to the Documents app.

To use this feature, your PC and iPhone need to connect to the same Wi-Fi network. In the side navigation menu, you’ll find an option named “Sharing via Wi-Fi”. Simply toggle it on to activate the feature.

Once you’ve turned it on, the app will show you two URLs right below the “Sharing via Wi-Fi” option.

Now launch the web browser on your computer and go to either of the URLs shown in the app. For example, the first URL shown in my app is, so I will access it on my computer.

Send Music files via VLC

When the web page is loaded, simply drag your music files and drop them onto the web interface, just like copy files between two windows. Alternatively, you can simply click on the “+” button to use the file dialog.

After transferring, your songs should appear in the app immediately. The VLC app also supports videos in most formats, so you can make use of it to put videos on your iPhone as well.

3. Using Cloud Services

Cloud storage is so popular these days. For music lovers, there are some free & big-name services that let you upload and sync your music collection on all of your devices.

Google Play Music

Google Play Music is a cloud-based music streaming service and it offers two listening plans: Free and Unlimited. With Its Free plan, you’re allowed to upload up to 50,000 of your own songs from the desktop for free.

If you’ve been using Google Chrome, you can upload tracks directly through the browser. If not, you will need to download Google’s Music Manager software.

Google Play Music

Once you’ve finished uploading your music collection to Google’s server, you can play it from any devices. For iOS, just install the Google Play Music app on your iPhone or iPad then sign in with the same account you used to upload music earlier.

Now, to see your uploaded songs, open the side navigation menu of the app, then select “Music library”. To download music tracks to your iPhone for enjoying them without an Internet connection, simply “pin” them in the app.

If you don’t want to keep a song in the app, you can remove it without worrying about the file being lost, as the original file is now stored in the cloud.

In the future, you can keep using Play Music’s website, or the Music Manager application to add new songs and get them synchronized on your iPhone.

In some countries, Google Play Music is not available on the store to install. If that’s your case, you can use Dropbox as an alternative.

You can install the Dropbox app on both your computer and your iPhone to make syncing music between them easier.

The free Dropbox account comes with 2GB of storage, and there are a couple of ways you can try to extend the space storage for free.

Music Dropbox

Although you’re able to save music offline, or minimize the app in the background and still listen to the playback, the built-in media player of Dropbox is not designed to be a fully-featured media player.

You can’t create your favorite playlists or play songs continuously. The solution is to install an additional cloud music player on your iPhone.

Music Cloud is a free and good app like that. The app will scan your Dropbox account for music files then ask you what you want to store locally on your iPhone.

4. iTunes alternatives

The process of transferring music to iOS devices using iTunes, for some people, can be a hassle. Luckily, we don’t have to rely on this bloated software all the time to manage our music library.

Here are a few alternatives to iTunes that will let you add music to your iPhone effortlessly. Music will be transferred to the core library, which means you can listen to your songs using the stock Music app.

3uTools (Windows only)

3uTools is a free iOS file and data management tool that makes it easier to manage apps, photos, music, ringtones, videos and other multimedia files on your iOS devices. It also allows you to view fully your device’s statuses such as jailbreak, battery, iCloud lock,…

Importing music using 3UTools is pretty simple. Once you have installed the application on your PC, connect your iPhone to the PC via the USB cable. 3uTools will detect your device and show you the device’s different statuses on the home screen.

Put music on iPhone using 3utools

Now click “Music” on the left sidebar, then click “Import”. You can choose a single music file or an entire folder from this option.

Once you’ve selected and confirmed, 3uTools will start importing music to your iPhone. Wait until the transferring process is finished and you can find all the songs in the Music app.

CopyTrans Manager is another free program that can fully replace iTunes for Windows user. The application allows you to quickly drag and drop music and videos from PC directly to your iOS device.

Playlists, podcasts, audiobooks, and ringtones can also be imported to your iPhone/iPad easily using this tool.

The ability to edit tracks and artwork is one of the outstanding features of CopyTrans Manager. You’re able to edit track album names and genres, meta-data such as track ratings and song lyrics as well.

Overall, CopyTrans is a great option for people who need to transfer or backup their music libraries.

Four methods above are the best methods to add music from your PC to your iPhone / iPad. They work with different conditions and therefore, we cannot tell you for sure which one is the best.

Try it yourself, and tell us, which one works best for you.
