I will keep this post updated to provide iOS users with the best method to record their device’s screen. As of now, iOS 11 has been released with the native screen recording tool. Meaning, you can now record your iPhone or iPad’s screen without using external tools on computers or third-party apps with complicated installations.
Let’s get started with the screen recording tool on iOS 11. If your device is running a lower iOS version, feel free to skip this part and move on to the next one.
iOS 11 Screen Recording
Gone are the days when the only official way to record the screen of an iOS device is to hook up the device to a Mac and use QuickTime to do the recording. Now, a native screen recording tool has been added in iOS 11 finally.
With it, you can easily record your screen even with record audio and voiceovers. Personally, I think it’s much better than any screen recording apps from third-party we had used before. Let’s see how it works!
Get started with the tool
By default, you should find the Screen Recording tool in the Control Center. It does not have an app, it’s simply a toggle for you to trigger the function. Recorded videos can then be saved to the Photos app.
If you cannot find the Screen Recording control tile, no worries, go to Settings > Control Center > Customize Controls. From there, under the “More Control” section, tap on the green plus icon next to “Screen Recording”. The tool should be added to the “Include” section and you can now access it from the Control Center.
Whenever you want to record your screen, simply swipe up from the bottom of your screen to open the Control Center. Then tap the Screen Recording button to initiate the screen recording.
It will begin counting down from 3 before actually starting, giving you time to get to the screen you want to record. However, you can edit and trim unwanted portions easily afterward with the basic editing tool of the Photos app.
Note: By default, the screen recording tool will also record in-app sounds. If you want to add your voiceovers, before recording, simply perform a long press or 3D Touch on the toggle in the Control Center. This will bring up the mic button to turn on microphone audio. After turning it on, you can tap “Start Recording” to begin.
When you want to stop recording and save it, tap on the Screen Recording control tile in the Control Center or the red status bar. A notification will pop up telling you that the video has been saved in the Photos app. Tapping and dragging down the notification will let you view or delete the video quickly.
The recorded video certainly includes unwanted portions at the beginning and the end. To remove them, in the Photos app, select the Edit button on your video. Then tap and hold on one of the black arrows on either side of the frame viewer, and move it inward. As you drag the arrow, it will display as a yellow cropping indicator.
Once you’re satisfied, tap on “Done” and select “Save as New Clip”.
If your device is running a lower iOS version such as iOS 10, iOS 9, iOS 8,… Check out the methods shown below:
How to install AirShou
AirShou is a tweaked app for screen recording on iOS devices. The app is not available to install from the App Store but there are many third-party sources that are providing you with the download.
At the present time, the best method to download and install AirShou is to use TutuApp, a new app market for both iOS & Android devices. You can read this article to know about TutuApp and how to use this app to get AirShou.
Once you’ve downloaded successfully the AirShou app, you will see its icon on the Home screen. But the app is still not available to use now. Just tap on it, you will see the pop-up telling you that AirShou has not been trusted on your device.
To make it a trusted app, follow the instructions below:
- Go to Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management
- On this page, you may find several enterprise apps
- Choose the profile corresponding to AirShou.
- Tap on the Trust button and one more time to confirm. Now the app is ready for use.
How to use AirShou
If you open the app for the first time, you may need to log in with Shou.TV – which is a gaming service. You can alternatively use your Facebook, Google or Twitter account to quickly log in.
Note: Since AirShou works by simulating an AirPlay Mirroring connection to itself, you first need to connect your device to a Wi-Fi network to get it working.
The main page provides us with two options: Broadcast and Record, simply select Record. After you enter the title and select the orientation, tap on next step. Now swipe up from the bottom of the screen to access Control Center, tap on AirPlay and select your device from the AirPlay Mirroring list. AirShou will automatically start to record the display as soon as AirPlay is connected. Once the video is saved to the Photos app, you can use a video editing app to trim off the unwanted sections.
EveryCord (formerly named iRec) is an application from iNoJB team. Installing EveryCord is pretty easy. If AirShou cannot be installed in the present time, then you can give it a shot. No jailbreak or computer needed.
On your iPhone or iPad, click on this link to go the official website and install it. If the app’s certificate gets revoked and cannot be installed (“Unable to Download App”), you’ll have to download the iPA and install using Cydia Impactor.
After you install EveryCord on your iOS device, go to Settings > Device Management > Select the app > Trust. Unlike other apps in the same arena, EveryCord doesn’t have a visible “Record” button. Instead, you have to name the recording first, then hit done to start.
BB Rec is another iOS screen recorder app that takes advantage of AirPlay mirroring, like AirShou and Vidyo. The reason I think BB Rec is worth mentioning in this article is that this app also allows you to broadcast your screen through a streaming server. The app interface is quite simple. You can start capturing as well as find your videos right from the main screen.
To install BB Rec, you can use two methods:
1) Download the app from Tutu Helper, or from vShare. Using Tutu Helper is simpler as you don’t need to use your computer. TutuApp also lets you install a dozen of tweaked apps, including Spotify++, Youtube++, Snapchat++, Kodi for iPhone, PokeGo++…
Requirements: iOS device running iOS 8 or later, Mac computer running OS X Yosemite or later, lightning cable.
In my opinion, using QuickTime is the best method to record iPhone’s screen. It’s very easy to use, no need to jailbreak your device. You don’t have to worry about third-party apps still working or not on your device like the aforementioned method.
Here is how to use QuickTime:
Step 1: Connect your iOS device to your Mac via the lightning cable
Step 2: Launch QuickTime Player, select File > New Movie Recording from the menu bar. (you can use keyboard shortcut Option-Command-N alternatively)
Step 3: A new window will appear. Click on the little arrow next to the circle button to reveal the drop down menu and then select your device from “Camera”.
Step 4: You can also choose the microphone and video quality. If you want to record the audio directly from your device, choose your device as the Microphone.
After setting up, click the Red button to begin. To stop, click the stop button in the QuickTime preview window. You can then save the resulting video as a .mov file on your Mac, or you can edit the video within QuickTime and convert it to another video format.
Tip: by hitting Cmd + T you’ll be able to directly trim your video before saving it, so you only keep the relevant part of the recording.
If you’re a Windows user, then this tool will suit your needs. LonelyScreen is a free application that can turn your Windows computer into an Apple TV for mirroring from your iPhone. The reasons I love it? Well, it’s free, the app interface is simple to use and the video quality is quite good.
There is a free version for Mac computers as well. If you’re using MacOS, you can use this LonelyScreen instead of QuickTime Player if there is no cable available. Here are the download links to two versions: Windows & Mac
After installing the application, all you have to do is launch it and on your iOS device, open Control Center – turn on “Airplay” – and select LonelyScreen (The default name). Now you will see your device screen projected to the computer window. Just click the Red button to start and stop recording.
All your saved videos can be found in the app’s folder. To access it, just click on the little folder icon in the bottom-right corner.
Display Recorder – a jailbreak tweak
The last screen recorder I want to show you is the jailbreak tweak named Display Recorder. I know it’s not a popular solution as Apple always pushes out new updates and quickly unsign the previous iOS versions to avoid users jailbreaking their devices. But if you have a chance to jailbreak your iPhone, this is one of the must-try tweaks.
Display Recorder is one of the most well-known tweaks among iOS jailbreak users. Let’s take a look at its features:
- Capturing a video of your device screen while also showing taps
- Adjustable frame rate, rotation/orientation, video format, and quality settings
- Recording mic audio
- Activator integration for quick access
- Many more…
The tweak is very easy to use. Once you’ve installed it, navigate to Settings and tap on Display Recorder to start configuring. Here you can see all the features I mentioned above.
After configuring, exit Settings and now you can launch Display Recorder and start using it. All resulting videos will be saved within the app. You can choose the option to save it to the Camera Roll as well.
Display Recorder is available for download on Cydia with the price tag of $4.99. In case your device is running iOS 7 or iOS 8, and this tweak doesn’t work flawlessly, you can try other jailbreak tweaks like Shou and RecordMyScreen.
Now that you know how to record your iPhone screen. Hopefully, you can find a tool that suits your needs. Remember to go back and check this article sometimes because I will bring new updates to you here.
If you know other applications that offer high video quality and have an affordable price, then let me and other users know about it by telling us your experience in the comment section below.
