Create an @iCloud.com Email Address on iPhone, iPad or Mac

If you are using an Apple ID with an email address that doesn’t end with @icloud.com, maybe a @gmail or @hotmail address, it’s possible to create a new and separate @icloud.com email address for iCloud and other Apple services.

@icloud.com email addresses are used for the email service provided by Apple and you can only create one when activating iCloud Mail on an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or a Mac computer. It’s not possible to create an @icloud.com by registering through a website.

In this article, I will demonstrate the walkthrough on how to make a new iCloud email address from Mac and iOS devices.

Create a new @iCloud email address from iPhone and iPad

1- Open the Settings app, select your Apple ID at the top of the screen, then select iCloud.

Turn on iCloud mail iPhone

2- Turn on Mail. You will be prompted to create a free @icloud.com email address to turn on iCloud Mail. Tap “Create” and follow the onscreen instructions.

If you don’t find the switch for Mail, then you have removed the Mail app. Just go to App Store, install this app, the Mail switch will appear.

For iOS 10.2 and earlier, go to Settings > iCloud > turn on Mail.

Troubleshooting: Error message that reads ‘Problem turning on mail’ is a common issue while creating a new @icloud email address. A simple way to fix it is to sign out your iCloud account and sign back in. I found the solution from a Reddit thread and it works for many users including myself.

Create an @icloud email address on Mac

1- Click the  icon at the top-left corner of the screen, and choose “System Preferences”.

2- Click “iCloud”.

3- Check the box next to “Mail” to enable iCloud Mail. It’s unchecked because you haven’t yet created an iCloud.com email.

4- Type in the desired iCloud email address and click OK. You cannot change your iCloud email address after creating it.

5- Click “Create” to confirm that you want to create the email address.

6- Close out of System Preferences. Your new email address will be added to the Mail app. And you will receive a welcome email from iCloud Mail.

Check iCloud Email via Web

Once you’ve created an @icloud.com email address, it binds to the Apple ID and you can use it to access mail, contacts, calendars, and more via the iCloud.com website.

That means you can check and use the iCloud email from anywhere by using any web browser without requiring a Mac, iPhone, or iPad. Here’s how to do it.

1- Open a web browser, go to https://www.icloud.com/ and log in with your iCloud email.

2- Once logged in, click on the Mail icon.

3- Now you can access to the iCloud email account and send/reply/forward emails directly from the iCloud Mail web client.

This web-based client is really useful since you can log in your iCloud account from a Windows PC or Android device. If this is the first time you visit iCloud.com, you should give it a look and discover other features it has to offer.

From the web-based client, you can also access contact lists, calendars, iCloud photos (you can download photos directly from iCloud to your device), iCloud Drive, notes, reminders, and many more.
