August 29, 2017

If you want to download a video to your iPhone/iPad and watch it offline, you’ll definitely need the help of a video downloader app. Unlike Safari or other web browsers, these tools will provide you with an option to save videos when you play them, and even let you export downloaded files to the Camera Roll.

In this article, I’m going to show you the best video downloader apps for iPhone and iPad that are currently available on the App Store, after testing multiple apps. Downloading videos to your iOS device is actually pretty easy once you know how. Keep reading the post, I’ll show you how to make use of these apps as well.

How to download videos on iPhone/iPad

Before we start diving into each app’s details, here’s something you should know. These apps basically are web browsers as they let you access the Internet, go to any web page if you have URLs. What makes them different is the ability to save files when you give a URL pointing to the file (URLs that have a file extension at the end).

For example, if the URL to a video is http://example.com/path/video.mp4, you just need to copy and paste the URL into a video downloader app shown below, it’ll let you save the video instead of just playing it.

If you want to download videos from Twitter, Youtube, Facebook,… you’ll need the help of some third-party tools that can get video download links from these social media sites. You can read more about it in our existing posts:

Finally, they are actually more multifunctional than just a video downloader. As long as you have a URL to a file, they can download and save it for you, no matter what file type it is. Some apps also have extra features like file management, file transferring, passcode setting,… Read on to know more.

Documents by Readdle is one of the top-notch apps for file management on iOS devices. With the extra download management features, it also can be considered as a solid contender in the downloader app arena.

In the bottom-right corner of the app’s interface, you’ll find an icon that lets you slide a full web browser into view. This built-in web browser is only used for saving files or web pages so it doesn’t have to be multifunctional like Safari or Chrome.

Download videos using Documents on iPhone

To download videos or any file types using Documents, you just need to access the link to the file or click and hold on it. The app will then let you change the file name and choose a folder to save it. You can choose to download a file into a directory within the app or even save it to iCloud.

Once you’re done, tap the Save button, Documents will start downloading the file immediately and save it into the pre-selected directory if successful.

You can watch your downloaded videos within the app as Documents supports video player. To move a video to Camera Roll, just find and move it to the Photo Albums folder. You can also quickly move files by dragging and dropping them. Once moved, you can launch the Photos app and watch the video from there.

Not only is it a powerful file & download manager app, Documents 5 have many more essential features such as document viewer & editor, zip extractor, cloud service manager. This app is really helpful for all iOS users at all levels and so, it is my first recommendation.

Downloader, as the name says, is an exclusive app for managing downloads on iOS devices. The app is not as versatile as Documents, but if you just want to save videos to your iPhone/iPad and watch offline, Downloader is still an option worth taking a look at.

Unlike Documents, Downloader will let you play the video on the web browser when you access to its URL, intead of showing a saving pop-up instantly. After viewing the video, if you want to save it, just tap the download button located in the center of the tool bar.
