Can you AirDop Music? The short answer is Yes!

AirDrop is an excellent way to share content between two Mac computers or a Mac and an iOS device, or two iOS devices, in the same vicinity. Apple makes it easy to transfer photos, videos, contacts, voice memos,… via AirDrop by showing the Share sheet for each file of these. But for music, it’s different!

If you’re an Apple Music subscriber, you will be able to share songs with other devices using AirDrop, but not your own personal imported library. Music that you have synced to your iPhone/iPad using iTunes cannot be shared.

However, you are able to AirDrop MP3 music files from Mac to iPhone/iPad, vice versa, and even between iOS devices by using a third-party app that can handle mp3 files on iOS. In this article, I will share with you everything you need to know about transferring Music via AirDrop!

1. Share songs in Apple Music via AirDrop

Music on the Apple Music subscription service can be shared easily with AirDrop.

Just find a song in your personal library, or in the Browser or For You sections. Then perform a 3D Touch gesture on that song, a menu including the “Share song” option will show up. If your iPhone doesn’t have 3D Touch, simply long-press the song will do the same thing.

Now select “Share song”, the Share sheet will appear with a list of AirDrop recipients at the top. Just choose the device whose you’d like to share with, then you’ll be good to go.

If you’re in the music player of the Music app, notice the three-dot button in the bottom-right corner of the screen. Tapping on it will bring up the same menu shown above.

Note that this “Share song” option is not available for your personal music synced from iTunes, therefore, music imported into iTunes, then synced to your iPhone cannot be shared this way.

2. Share MP3 Music Files via AirDrop

Wondering if you can transfer a song from your Mac to your iPhone with AirDrop? Yes, you can. But you need a third-party app to handle your MP3 file since the stock Music app doesn’t receive files from AirDrop.

When you AirDrop a music file to your iPhone or iPad or iPod, a pop-up will appear on the iOS device’s screen with a list of apps that are capable of opening the file. The list differs depending on which apps you have installed on your device.

AirDrop Music from Mac to iPhone

I find the only stock app that can handle MP3 files from AirDrop is the Files app, but it’s actually not a good option. Of course, you can use it to play the music file, but if you want to enjoy a full music experience, I recommend installing a music player app.

I personally use Documents, it’s a great file manager app for iOS devices. Free and no ads. Documents has a built-in media player that can organize folders into playlists with the ability to shuffle and loop your favorite tracks. After you install the app, you will have an option to receive the music files using Documents like in the image above.

Most file manager apps you find on the App Store will allow you to import and play the music files. So you can sift through them to find a good one as per your need.

Now you can also transfer your MP3 files from your iOS device (only music stored in the third-party app) to a Mac or another iOS device nearby. For instance, in the Documents app, just app the three-dot button next to the song, then select “Share”. You will be able to transfer it to other AirDrop recipients.

Remember that if you transfer music from iPhone to iPhone through AirDrop, the other device will also need to have an app to handle the file, like yours.

So that’s how you can transfer songs with AirDrop at the moment. Have you ever used a third-party app to receive AirDrop music files? If yes, then let us know which app you used and your experience in the comment section below.
